Citrix/WTS License Management
Software license management is challenging enough. It is even more challenging if your network environment includes servers running Citrix or Windows Terminal Server (WTS) because very few software license management products offer support for applications delivered through these technologies.
There are three types of software licenses that you need to be aware of in a Citrix or Windows Terminal Server environment, each of which requires a unique approach to software license management.
- Concurrent: Licensing based on a maximum number of users at any time. A software license management solution must be capable of preventing users beyond the maximum from running an application.
- Per seat: Licensing based on a specific number of client machines. Software management technology must be capable of preventing additional non-licensed machines from launching the application.
- Per user: Licensing based on a specific number of users. The software license management tool must be capable of preventing additional non-licensed users from launching the application.
As you can imagine, to manage software licenses under any of these scenarios, you need a software license management technology that gathers software usage information not only at the server level, but also at the user and machine level — plus capabilities that let you control which user and/or machines can launch specific applications.
Express Software Manager®
Unlike many software license management products, Express Software Manager works as well in a Citrix or WTS environment as it does in a Windows desktop environment, enabling you to collect software usage information at the user and machine level as well as at the server level. In addition to revealing which users and machines are running each Citrix or WTS application, it provides the ability to control, through user authorization profiles, which users or machines can run each application. Collecting this information enables you to manage the three license scenarios above.
