System Requirements
Express Software Manager (comprised of Express Inventory and Express Meter) includes several integrated components for data collection, administration, and reporting. These components reside on the system administrator's workstation, servers, and end-user PCs.
The database, web-based reporting, and communication components can be installed on one server or on multiple servers depending on your specific requirements. If you choose to install all components to a single server, you should ensure the selected machine meets the requirements shown for the "Express Database" component below.

Express Administrative Console + more info
Description: The Express Administrative Console, typically installed on the product administrator's desktop, is the primary interface for configuring and using Express Software Manager to accomplish such tasks as configuring the product, initiating inventories, importing license data and enabling application metering.
Requirements: 2.0GHz, Windows Workstation XP SP2 (or above) or Windows Server 2003 SP1 (or above), 1GB RAM, 100MB disk, Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 (or above).
Express Reports Console + more info
Description: The Express Reports Console is the term used to describe delivery of Express Reporting (the Express Reports Web Site) via a web browser. Reports are generated from data residing in the Express Database, and the Reports Console allows you to create filters to report precisely on the data you want.
Requirements: IE 6.0 (or above) or Firefox 3.0 (or above).
Express Server + more info
Description: The Express Server is a component that manages data moving between the Administrative Console and the Express Database. The Express Server is often installed on the administrator's desktop with the Administrative Console. The Express Server also handles scheduled maintenance tasks such as network discovery and automatic software identification and configuration.
Requirements: 2.0GHz, Windows Workstation XP SP2 (or above) or Windows Server 2003 SP1 (or above), 100 MB disk, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (or above). The following are memory recommendations for the Express Server machine based on the number of Express Clients installed:
| Number of computers | Recommended RAM |
|---|---|
| 0 - 1000 | 1GB |
| 1001 - 2000 | 2GB |
| 2001+ | 4GB |
Express Database + more info
Description: The Express Database is a Microsoft SQL Server database that stores inventory, usage and control information from client workstations; application and machine configuration data; and the Express Software Identification Database (ESID)® which is used to identify applications. The Express Database runs on Microsoft SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, or SQL Server 2008, including Express editions. (SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is included with the product).
Requirements: 2.0GHz, SQL Server 2000 (or above) (SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is included with the product), Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (or above) (required for automated database creation/initialization); database administrator credentials for initial database creation.
Note: The Express Database can reside on any Microsoft SQL Server, although the RAM requirements may vary greatly depending on other SQL Server-based applications. The Express Database will consume approximately 1MB of data for every computer on which the Express Client is installed. The following are guidelines based on running the Express Database on a dedicated SQL Server:
| Number of computers | Recommended RAM |
|---|---|
| 0 - 500 | 2GB |
| 501 - 2000 | 4GB |
| 2001+ | 8GB (64-bit processor & OS) |
Express Reports Web Site + more info
Description: The Express Reports Web Site is a Microsoft IIS-based web site that delivers Express Software Manager's reports via a browser (see Express Reports Console above). The Express Reports Web Site is only licensed for one IIS server and can be installed on the same IIS server as the Express Access Point.
Requirements: 2.0GHz, Windows 2003 Server SP1 (or above), 1GB RAM, 100MB disk, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (or above), IIS 6.0* (or above).
*IIS 5.1 can be used when evaluating the product on a single machine running Windows XP.
Express Access Point + more info
Description: The Express Access Point is a web service that manages communication of data between Express Clients and the Express Database including inventory, usage, control and configuration information. The Express Access Point runs on Microsoft IIS. Multiple access points may be utilized to handle scaling and domain access issues.
